This is not a time for an event but a time for change.
The world is shining a light on the blatant injustices towards Black lives everywhere. George Floyd. Adama Traoré. Breonna Taylor. Dominique Clayton. Botham Jean. Atatiana Jefferson. Philando Castile. Tamir Rice. Abdirahman Abdi. Bettie Jones. Walter Scott. Natasha McKenna. Steve Biko. And countless more. Enough is enough.
We were excited to spend the day virtually with you all at Hootsuite CXN, but having a marketing event right now is disrespectful with all the pain in the world. We believe that the space needs to be preserved for the voices of the people in the streets and their allies. And we need to focus on being a better ally.
This is not the moment for silence.
We all must support the collective anger, grief, and deep frustration of our Black colleagues and communities around the world and not let them suffer in silence. As Martin Luther King Jr. put it, “In the end, we will not remember the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."
As a start, we will be using our social channels to pause the publishing of our own content. We will instead support and amplify the voices of those at the forefront of this fight for racial justice and share employee recommended #BlackLivesMatter resources. We will also be using this as a moment for some honest reflection on how we meaningfully support each other and specifically our Black community. We know that we need to do more to fight racism—including making diversity a priority in all that we do. We must and will do better.
We'll find a future date to spend the day with you and want to thank you for supporting Hootsuite CXN. We believe that social is a tool that can help us build strong relationships, supportive communities, and a kinder, diverse, connected world. And we’re excited to help build that world with all of you.
With love and respect,
Your friends at Hootsuite
